Stefan Ulmer made a back-of-the-envelope calculation based on energy and power consumption. The explanation goes as follows:
1. CERN produces 3e7 antiprotons per AD cycle or about 1e15 per year
2. This is about 1e15*1.67e-27kg = 1.67 nanogram per year
3. 1 gram of antiprotons has an energy (E=mc^2) of 9e13 Joule
4. The efficiency of the antiproton production process is 1e-9, so you need a billion times more energy: 9e22 Joule
5. The cost of power for CERN is 1kWh = 3.6e6 Joule = 0.1 euro
6. So that would make 0.1/3.6e6*9e22 = 2.5e15 euro
7. And it would take CERN 6e8 years

    • @Craig Corson I have written "1*10^15" for clarity because you have been confused about what the "e" means. And you are still confused. Once again: 1e15 is 10^15. It's not 1, and it's not 10^16. 10e15 is 10*10^15, or 10^16 (which can also be written using the "e" notation as 1e16).

    • @MikeRosoftJH And you still have not answered my very simple question. You wrote "I have written it as 1*10^15". Of what use is the 1 in that expression? Here's a new one: if, as you claim, the e denotes 10^, then why did Elise write 1e15 when she could have, should have simply written 10^16, or 10e15?

    • @Craig Corson So you *don't* know what the "e" represents. 1e15 is not 1, it's 10^15 (in order to make it clear what the number before the "e" represents, I have written it as 1*10^15 - just like 2e15 is 2*10^15). 10e15 is not 10^15; it's 10*10^15=10^16. The "e" does not represent the exponentiation operator (which is usually written as "^" when superscript is not available); it represents "*10^".

    • @MikeRosoftJH Don't condescend. I know what the e represents. You haven't answered my question. Why did you write 1*10^15, when 10^15 is sufficient, or 10e15? As I said in my original comment, 1e15 = 1. Dianna has made an error, or rather, Elise has, whoever that is.

  • Anti made EASY!!! (1) get some UNUNPENTIUM at least 5% pure (needs some ultracentrifuge...) (2) put in a vacuum chamber inside a magnetic bottle the same you make with that anti hidrogen (3) fire a low speed proton bean over the ununpentium (4) the ununpentium nucleous breaks and result in one or more anti-protons per break (5) the anti-protons are stripped off the ununpentium with the magnetic + electric field and target into a thermocouple array (6) one side of the thermocouple is cold, other is heated by anti-protons... so a DC current is generated... (7) DONE... now go to sell to Greta Thumberg you will get billions in finance to solve the "how dare" problem with polution and energy generation SEE??? easy!!

  • Well, it is not material, it is anti-material. Customs tried to bust me for smuggling 0.003 grams of anti-matter. I told them it was twice as much and that they should raise the fine to pad their paychecks. So they poured it onto the scale, and poof! they evidence disappeared and the charges were dropped. Because you know, SCIENCE! 😁

  • Diana, I would like to ask if it may be possible that the big bang was caused by a collision with matter and antimatter with only the matter blown away fast enough not to come in contact with any antimatter so becoming the only things left we can see? And if so, could whats left of the antimatter be stuck in a huge blob where the contact happened, but we can't see it anymore because its antimatter or its so far away we would never be able to see it now?

  • Maybe you can't hold it because matter, like everything we can see obeys physics and goes along with us forward in time at 1 second per second but antimatter travels backwards in time at 1 second per second and we only see it briefly in the present. At the quantum level though we can see it because it would behave just as matter does popping in and out of that present, past and future. Just my theory. Prove me wrong.
