Bonsai Empire is a community built by enthusiasts and experts from around the world. We introduce you to the fascinating and living art of Bonsai, and help you get started!
A common misconception is that the plants used for Bonsai are genetically 'dwarfed' plants. Bonsai trees are normal plants, propagated like any other, but trained using sophisticated techniques to keep them in miniature size. The styling of these miniature trees involve important techniques like regular pruning and wiring.
Keeping a Bonsai tree alive is really not that hard. But because the trees are planted in small pots, they have less reserves in terms of water and nutrients. If you pay attention to your tree and water when needed, your tree will thrive!

  • Congratulations 👌 Very beautful bonsai good work 🍀 love bonsai André Paranaguá city 🇧🇷🌱👏👏👏🤗

  • Thats what they call root massacre...no update at all because those little plants never survive...i wish and hope im wrong.

  • Before is better

  • Wow 😯

  • Very beautiful mame bonsai👍👍

  • あなたの仕事は素晴らしいです、よくやった。私は今、これらの木に完全に恋をしています。南アフリカから

  • I found it worth noting the vast majority of trees viewed in this video are actually in soil and promote root exchange at least to some degree. I don't think I saw *any* mature material permanently sitting in containers of this kind? I don't have an issue with promoting root growth in a water bubbler, but I have trouble seeing any of the demonstrated trees lasting long if the water is not actively oxygenated or at least switched out regularly, due to root rot. Additionally, as someone else has touched upon, the nutrient requirements (and indeed, even just the water) via roots would likely promote extensive algae growth, to where it'd be impractical to constantly clean out and put the root system back in. I guess where I'm left at this point is to ask what Mr. Nakajima's goals are with this endeavor? Is the goal 100% artistic or does he actually expect these trees to mature in this sort of form factor? And what happens if/when the tree and its roots exceed the space which these containers can provide? Removal looks like it would harm the tree.

    • I'm glad someone can see this and it's not just me.

  • Outstanding work! I love this video!

  • For how long does a tree can survive in that sort of water??? But is very interestig to see the future of lunar cultivation, when we will had already destroyed the earth.

  • Instan bonsai

  • A new idea of presentation, but how long can the tree be kept in water and what kind of suitable location? The trees are firstly trained and shaped in soil for many years before transplanting into water. It is too risky to lose a tree.

  • nice work, excellent ideas, thanks for share

  • Yo entendía que "bonsai" significaba acompañar a la naturaleza con arte, no destrozar a la naturaleza x hacer arte. No me gustó.

  • 🙋👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍

  • Son una pasada😍

  • I love earth.

  • So I'm calling bullshit. These plants will no survive with out extremely oxygenated water and some kind of nutrients. Hes keeping things secret because its bullshit. I seen no older trees growing in un oxygenated and fertilized water in this video. The video said he has other trees growing like this why did we not see them. Prove me wrong. I need way more proof then a handful of freshly planted trees. Why is there a need for secrets?

  • Love the miniature landscapes, really well done!

    • @Apartment Bonsai by Vinny Chirayil to be clear I'm not saying a tree cant be grown this way. The way they show here is not. Thanks for the tip of the ficus.

    • @Apartment Bonsai by Vinny Chirayil it's the fact that this is a publicity stunt. That tree cant live in that container there is no aeration for the roots.

    • @James Walker... on youtube, search for a video called "worlds largest hydroponic ficus". you will see a big tree, that started as a tiny cutting and is now almost 30 years old. i myself have a ficus tree whose roots are fully in water, for over 3 years now. if you give it care, they will survive, regardless of the growing medium. if care is missing, even trees growing in soil can die easily. is your basic complaint about potted plants having less life compared to nature or is it particularly to water medium ?

    • @Apartment Bonsai by Vinny Chirayil the way I see it they are living plants and they should be treated as such not like a paintings. They are art but there living. I think we are only custodians of the plants. This hole thing is crazy. U take a tree that should live for hundreds of years and cut its life sant to a year. All this is is a publicity stunt to get there name out there. Am I the only one that this its crazy to say they have older plants but not show them?

    • @James Walker ... by sustainable, what time frame are you looking at ? few years enough ? or does it have to match soil based time frame ?

  • Those glass containers that are hand blown over the rock are even cooler than the trees.

  • İn side to water okey bur juniper root the roots need oxygen, only the water will kill the roots.this is not to hidroponic ı dont understand

    • James walker I know this publicity stunt.

    • @bonsaisan bonsai it's a publicity stunt.

    • If it develops so well in the water juniper, then let's tell you what is needed for the bonsai pot Kimuro san let all the old junipers put in the water.

    • Junipers grow in water very well.

  • very nice information about aqua bonsai , thanks for sharing with us

  • ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

  • Those containers must get pretty gross with algae very fast.

    • @James Walker Then try it. Don't forget to use Osmosis water.

    • @Enty Ropy I would love to see that.

    • @James Walker I have some trees in osmosis water for over a year now without feeding anything at all and they still look healthy, it depends on if they need to change their foliage and if they need to grow much. You can keep them alive rly long, believe me or even better, try it yourself.

    • @Enty Ropy no tree will last long only being foliar spayed. Can plants shore like air plants or carnivorous plants but trees will not last long at all other wise we wouldn't need to collect roots.try collecting a pine without roots.

  • Woundnt it be considered as over watering/root rot?

    • @Chris Willette Bonsai I cant believe people believe this.

    • @Luckma1 and that is not what they are doing at all this is a fraud. We could talk all day about how this could happen but that's not that is being patrad here.

    • James Walker yes exactly! They’ll live for all of a week and then die on you unless there O2 being pumped in to it

    • @James Walker I mean they could build a small pump into the stone.... would even look cooler if it would bubble...

  • What is the name of the tree?

  • Très belle vidéo.

  • Not my cup of sake.

    • Any glass cup. A cup of sparks, for example😂

  • I’ve had no problems with oak or tulip poplar so cut away folks

  • 10:24 Jesus guy put a new damn blade in that thing I mean damn

  • ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

  • Volume Dude! Can't hear you !!

  • Great video ! Does anyone know the name of the music?

  • Thank you for that fantastic documentary! Makes me understand why some pots are more expensive. After watching we should all know, that these are worth it. I love the passion! :)

  • Lindo espetáculo adoro bonsai trabalho maravilhoso parabéns lindo

  • Very interesting in seeing all the different processes from these Masters of their trades - very cool.

  • inneseasry suffering for the tree, so sad

  • Is that black tape over the raffia?

  • Ser leigo em algo, é complicado. O mestre parece um gênio no que faz, mas pra mim, ele acabou com a árvore.

  • Fantastic video

  • Absolutly awesome craftsmen

  • I've seen these on sale at Walmart for 10 bucks. Pretty pricey in my opinion. But maybe you can get these cheaper directly from an Asian country where they mass produce them.

  • You may also make some video about legendary pots made in Yixing, China.

  • Awesome video. Keep up the great work.

  • First of all, let me be clear that I have the utmost respect for Rafael en Bjorn as a Bonsai artist and I love there work and videos! But this mighty old Olive creation is an exception to that rule! All that gnarly and ancient-looking deadwood that tell a natural and mighty old Olive story and then those needly straight downwards hanging Spruce like branches...well that is in my humble opinion fare from looking natural, quite the opposite! This remarkable old tree deserves to look like an Olive and not as a needly styled Juniper or Pine tree! We see too much of those as it is in my opinion! Why not style it like it is now but with more gnarly Olive like branches that grow in different directions like leave trees (especially Olives) do in general...only than you can call it (more) natural looking! Now it is styled way too formal looking in comparisons to that stunning deadwood! Hope you guys don't mind me saying all this, but I just had to state my humble opinion?! Cheers, Hans van Meer.

  • Excellent documentary! Realy good work quys and thanks for this video. I'm simply fascinated about masters respect for the clay for the whole process of making the pot and their techniques. More vids like that guys.

  • This is the cheap DIY in 10 minutes North American version of Bonsai.

  • Can u please Share the name of this plant

  • but did it survive all that hacking?? what does it look like now?????

  • Tree's have feelings u know.. u torture this poor fella

  • A work of art, maybe too much deadwood?

  • for me is this you best production ! Super Schnitt und Sound :-) grüsse aus Heidelberg

  • Rupanya ada salah satu komentator yg gak seneng sama karya bpk robert... Kayak nya dia ngiri karna tidak bisa kayak beliau, yg dunia mengakui. Mantap bpk robert...

  • I love hearing the stories of Japanese artisans who are the descendants of Japanese artisans. It a world that's always changing, it's comforting to know that there are still people practicing and preserving ancestral knowledge from generations past.

  • Many thanks for a great video. I hope that one day I would be afforded the opportunity to be able to travel to shops like this. It would be a privilege and honour to meet and talk to real craftsman like those in Your video.

  • Absolutely amazing work Bonsai Empire

  • What a beautiful video. We owe a lot to the those potters. And to those that came before them.

  • Oscar, I really loved this video. One can really see the artistry, the craftmanship, love and respect you put in this video. Yes please! More of this kind of videos! Your other videos are beautifull and I always look forward to see them but whit this you reached another level! Thank you. Regards from Sweden.

  • Fantastic insight into the process!

  • The best documentary/film i’ve seen so far keep the good work up!

  • the tree survive after this ? thats the question

  • That’s one way to kill a tree

  • Superb video, Masters at work

  • It is perfect. Thanks for bringing this to us. It is pretty much fascinating to see the people of Japan being devoted to their works with such a dedication 🙏

  • Very educational film on the work - and craftsmanship - that goes in to making Bonsai pots. I will no longer look at my 'pots' as *just* pots. Thank you for such an informative film. I'm returning to give time to the Bonsai I've had a number of years but had to plant in to containers due to other life commitments, just happened across your film and have now subscribed.

    • Thanks Frank, really appreciate your comment and glad it was educational!

  • WOW! People come to see this as if it is a movie 🍿 ?

  • WOW!!!! . . . Such an amazing and very interesting video. Each and every bonsai video I watch just makes my heart grow fonder. I've been dedicated to bonsai for many years, yet I've still so much to learn.

  • Maravilloso 👌😍

  • Thank you so much for the time and dedication that went into making this video! I am a potter myself and I absolutely loved it!!

  • Absolutely wonderful thank you so much

  • We really love to hear your opinion on this film! Should we do more? On what topics? Let us know!

    • Would definitely love to see more of these. Films could be done on a particular bonsai artist, or a look at a particular style of bonsai, for example. Even as a previous commenter mention, a film on tool making would be great. Would love to see 30 min. films too. 20 mins just didn't seem long enough.

    • Great production and insight on their processes. Make one on bonsai tools! Even one on biogold would be interesting =D

  • This calming and besutoful video has helped me during a very stressful and heart breaking day. The dedication to the craft of these talented individuals is phenomenal and the video is amazingly edited.

  • The way this craftsmanship has been passed over by father to son, the dignity and respect for the material and the techniques is truly unique. In the west there used to be the same mindset, but not anymore. Work ethics and morale is always a result of a pristine product and tokoname is not exception. Great vid.

  • 1st step to zen goals is finishing this video.

  • Ein wirklich schönes Video. Handarbeit mit langer Tradition und von Generation zu Generation weitergegeben. Mal ein ehrliches Danke für diesen Beitrag und Einblick in die Herstellung.

  • Gorgeous, congrats on video.

  • Where to buy pot molds like Katsushi Kataoka?

  • Great the video. Thank you so much

  • I absolutely love it, wow I just got inspired

  • Awesome!

  • Without seeing an after, I can only say this tree has been ruined.

  • Awesome!

  • Se cago en el árbol.
